What a 5-Inch FPV Drone Costs to Build

Every "how much does an FPV drone cost" answer online is a range with a shrug in it. Here is a real one: a specific 5-inch freestyle build, every part priced, nothing left as "and some odds and ends".

The build, line by line

This is the default 5-inch freestyle configuration in our 3D builder — a 225 mm stretched-X on 5 mm arms, which is the do-everything platform most people should start on.

That is the aircraft. It is worth noticing where the money actually goes: the HD video system is 43% of the build — more than the frame, motors, props and flight controller put together. Fly analog instead and the same airframe lands near $300.

What it does

Those parts are not chosen to hit a price. They are chosen to fly, and the numbers come back from RotorLab, our performance-engineering partner, rather than from a spec sheet:

  • All-up weight: 582 g
  • Thrust-to-weight: 6.1:1 — and 4.6:1 once the pack sags under load
  • Hover time: 24.6 minutes
  • Top speed: 147 km/h
  • ESC headroom: 83% margin at full throttle

Thrust-to-weight above about 4:1 is where a quad stops feeling like it is dragging itself around. Above 8:1 you are mostly buying the ability to break things. Six is a good place to live.

What the price does not include

This is where most build guides quietly stop, and it is why people's first build costs half again what they budgeted.

A radio. The receiver in the table is the part that goes in the aircraft. The controller in your hands is separate, and it is a one-time purchase that outlives several drones. Ours start at $94.79 for a RadioMaster Pocket and run to $275.99 for a TX16S.

Goggles. Same story, and the same warning: they must match your video system. The build above is Walksnail, so it needs Walksnail goggles — $275.99 for the Goggles L. An analog build uses analog goggles from $179.99.

A charger and spare packs. Nobody flies one battery.

Add a mid-range radio and goggles and the honest all-in number for a first HD 5-inch is closer to $850. Everything after that first flight is just packs and props.

Should you buy a bind-and-fly instead?

Sometimes. A ready-made quad is cheaper up front and you fly sooner.

Build your own when you want to choose the parts, understand what failed when something does, and repair it for the price of the broken component rather than the price of a new aircraft. That last point is the real economics of this hobby: a crashed self-built quad is usually a $20 arm and an evening.

Buy ready-made when you want to fly this weekend and do not care what is inside.

Where the money is worth spending

If you are trimming, trim in this order:

  1. Keep the flight controller good. It is the cheapest place to buy reliability and the most expensive place to save $20.
  2. Keep the battery good. A tired pack sags, and sag is what turns a 6:1 quad into a 4:1 one. The builder shows you the sag figure for exactly this reason.
  3. Video is where the money is, and where it should be. Analog is genuinely fine, genuinely cheaper, and what most people learned on.
  4. Frames are commodities. A $36 frame and a $90 frame both fly. The expensive one survives more crashes.

Before you fly it

In the US, recreational flyers need to pass the free TRUST test and register anything over 250 g. This build is 582 g, so registration applies. It takes about ten minutes and costs $5.

Once it is together, the tuning is done in Betaflight, and the radio link is set up through ExpressLRS.

Price it yourself

Change any part in the builder and the price and the flight numbers both move with it. Swap the HD air unit for analog and watch $150 come off. Put a 7-inch frame under it and watch hover time climb past 50 minutes.

Frequently asked

Can I build this for under $300? Yes, with analog video and a cheaper pack. The airframe, motors, props, stack and receiver come to roughly $230.

How long does a 5-inch fly? The 24.6 minutes above is hover time, which is the honest way to compare builds but not how anyone flies. Freestyle on a 1300 mAh 6S is realistically 4–6 minutes.

Do I need a 6S battery? 6S is the current default for 5-inch. It draws less current for the same power, which means less heat and thinner wire.

What tools do I need? A decent soldering iron, hex drivers, and a smoke stopper for the first power-up. The iron is the one not to cheap out on.
